According to a study published in the online issue of Neurology, statins can lower the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage. An intracerebral hemorrhage is caused by bleeding in the brain. On the other hand, statins are known to reduce the risk of stroke from blood clots.
For the study, the researchers looked into the health records and prescriptions for statin use of 989 people and 1,175 people who had an intracerebral hemorrhage in the lobe area and non-lobe area of the brain, respectively.
The lobe region of the brain includes the cerebrum, along with frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes whereas the non-lobe region includes the basal ganglia, thalamus, cerebellum, and brainstem.
The findings of the study showed that 6.8% of the participants who had a stroke were taking statins for five or more years in comparison to 8.6% of the participants who did not have a stroke. The researchers also found that people using statins had a 17% and 16% lower risk of stroke in the lobe and non-lobe regions of the brain after adjusting for factors like high blood pressure, diabetes, and alcohol use.
